So when I write I often listen to music. Unfortunately, I can never listen to music that has anyone singing (the type of music I listen to the rest of the time) but a few years ago I created a playlist called “Moody Musings” which I still play whenever I want to think/write while listening to music. I find it helps keep me going, and also helps inspire me.

I’d love it if others shared playlists they listen to, and when they listen to them. It doesn’t have to be writing. Just tell me your playlist, and when you listen to it. Here is my “Moody Musings”

  1. River Flows In You – by Yiruma from the album “First Love”
  2. Homonculus – by Ooshima Michiru from the soundtrack to “Full Metal Alchemist.”
  3. One Day Diary – by Yiruma from the album “H.I.S. Monologue”
  4. For You – from the soundtrack of “Marmalade Boy”
  5. Bella’s Lullaby – by Carter Burwell from the soundtrack to “Twilight”
  6. Bach Cello Suite – Suite’s No. 1 Allemande – played by Yo-Yo Ma from “The Unaccompanied Cello Suite”
  7. Pope’s Gypsy Cadenza – played by Joshua Bell from “The Red Violin” soundtrack.
  8. Cello Suite No. 1 Prelude – played by Yo-Yo Ma (I think) from the soundtrack of “The Pianist”
  9. Meditation – by Massenet from the Renee Fleming recording of “Thais”
  10. Kyoudai – by Ooshima Michiru from the soundtrack to “Full Metal Alchemist.”
  11. Mika’s Song (Piano Version) – by Yiruma from the album Destiny of Love
  12. Moulin Rouge – From the album “Moulin Rouge” from Laserlight
  13. Fayeth in Faith – by Christopher Young from the soundtrack of “Entrapment”
  14. Ouran Concerto Moderato marciale for oboe, 2 horns, violin and string quartet – by Hirano Yoshihisa from  Ouran High School Host Club Soundtrack & Character Song 2

I love listening to music while I write, too. Sometimes if someone’s singing in English, it can get in the way — but I’ve gotten around that with foreign language songs! If you like the human voice, but don’t want the distraction, let me know some genres, and I’ll hook you up with some suggestions.

I don’t remember to listen to music a lot of times when I write. But I never got back to you on who’s on my play list. Here’s a few: Band of Horses, Broken Family Band, Neko Case with or without the New Pornographers, anything Tweedy’s done before during or after Wilco. Arcade Fire, The Shins, Death Cab, The Flaming Lips, Flogging Molly… am I getting boring yet? OK, I’m on Jack Johnson and am stopping there to listen.

Thanks for sharing, I ended up on your blog via the NanoWrimo site and have now tuned into your playlist for the second time.

I don’t have a playlist yet, but I love to listen to Keiko Matsui, Gotan Project (tango music) and anything with a smooth Jazz feeling to it.

    thanks for sharing!
